Our Legacy
1909
Lala Atma Ram, a visionary book trader in Lahore’s Anarkali Bazaar, laid the foundation of what would become one of India’s pioneering indigenous publishing houses—Atma Ram & Sons. At a time when publishing in India was monopolised by foreign entities, Lala Atma Ram and his son Sh. Ram Lal Pury committed themselves to a mission: to make educational and culturally relevant content accessible to Indians, authored by Indians. Their dedication sparked a movement in Indian publishing—one that reflected the voice, vision, and values of a future independent India.
1947
Partition brought with it heartbreak and upheaval. As Lahore’s fate hung in the balance, Sh. Ram Lal Pury made the courageous decision to leave everything behind and begin anew in Delhi. He arrived with little but a burning commitment to continue the legacy his father had begun. With support from his sons, Sh. Ish Kumar Puri and Sh. Sushil Puri, Atma Ram & Sons slowly rose again. A second Delhi store soon opened, this time focused on Hindi literature, followed by branches in Lucknow and other cities. Their name once again became synonymous with trusted books and educational excellence.
1950s–70s
In the post-Independence years, Atma Ram & Sons flourished in the vibrant intellectual ecosystem of Kashmere Gate, Delhi. Their headquarters became more than a publishing house—it was a salon for the country’s finest minds. Authors, professors, journalists, and civil servants frequently gathered for discussions and meals, especially the famous Saturday Mutton Curry lunches that became part of the lore. This space was as much about ideas as it was about books.
A Presidential Honour
A landmark moment in the company’s journey came when Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President, selected Atma Ram & Sons as his official publisher—a rare honour that remains a proud milestone in our history.
